In tonight’s the Rookie recap, Officer Nolan along with his probie were on night shifts. There were quite a few people that covered for Nolan during his wedding and then his honeymoon. He was returning those favors by covering the night shift. Nolan was fine with being alert at night.

His probie was the one struggling. Officer Celina Juarez was so tired at night that sometimes she forgets to take the suspect out of the car. She was still learning and so Nolan was using night shifts as a means of continuing her education. It turns out it’s true that freaks come out at night. They also carry guns nowadays. The officers were alerted by Bailey when she overheard gunshots in the neighborhood she was in.

Nolan’s wife was the first to respond to the scene. She was a paramedic with the LA Fire Department. She had to wait for the cops to deem the scene safe and Celina made a rookie mistake. She forgot to clear the closet. She found a woman dying from a gunshot wound. She said the scene was clear.

The paramedics move it and that’s when they hear someone in the closet. Celina made a mistake not checking that first, but thankfully it wasn’t a lethal mistake. The person in the closet turned out to be a toddler girl.

There were three adults in the house. Two were killed instantly. The other needed medical attention. There was no one to take care of the girl or to take custody of her.

Her dad was killed. Her grandma was killed. Her mother was fighting for her life. There really was no one else in the picture. Nolan being Nolan, he couldn’t let a girl enter the foster care system. He talked to his wife and they both agreed to take temporary custody of the toddler. They thought it would be easy because they knew what to expect.

Nolan has been down this route before. He raised his son just fine. Bailey was still new to it and she only agreed to it because she thought it was a temporary decision. The little girl’s name was Anna. The detectives were going to investigate what happened to her family.

No one was sure if Anna had seen anything. They were all hoping she didn’t. They had enough on their hands what with the city going into a panic. Segreant Brandford wasn’t around to help because he was off getting justice. He was former military and one of his old buddies reached out to him about a guy they knew.

The guy they knew got two of their men killed when they all served together. Brandford’s friend wanted to kill the guy. Brandford couldn’t do that because he was now a cop. His friend was now a military lawyer. They have a lot to lose if they kill a man in cold blood.

Brandford wanted to at least talk to the guy. The conversation went nowhere. The guy knew he was untouchable. He technically already ruled dead. Bradford signed off on that report. He couldn’t come out now saying he lied. Ray was also on alert now so they couldn’t exactly surprise him to kill him. Bradford was still considering his options when Nolan heard back from Luna Grey.

Sergeant Grey’s wife was the social worker assigned to Anna’s case. She was the one that informed Nolan and Bailey that Anna’s mom died after surgery. Anna really doesn’t have anyone. She would normally be placed in a center until the authorities either find distant family or a permanent home for her.

Nolan said they could keep Anna until a home was found for her. Bailey didn’t want to do that. Bailey and Nolan talked. She said she was worried about being around kids because she once had a babysitting job go bad.

Bailey was teenager babysitting for her neighbor’s toddler when she took her eyes off him. It was only for a minute. In that minute the little boy fell into the pool. Bailey got him out in time. The little boy was okay only Bailey’s fear around small children remains. She’s afraid of making another mistake.

Nolan reassured her. He told her that they had nothing to worry about. He then got called away to deal with Oscar Hutchinson’s lawsuit. Nolan was tied up all day dealing with that and it left Bailey by herself with Anna for most of the day.

Anna’s parents were into drugs. They turned their life around after Anna. Anna’s dad had been in and out of prison until he learned about the pregnancy. He stepped away from the drug scene. They got a tenant to help pay the bills. The same tenant that disappeared after the murders.

The detectives tracked him down and brought him in for questioning. Anna meanwhile had gotten away from Bailey for a few minutes. This sent Bailey into a panic until she found Anna hiding in a closet. Anna has a thing about closets.

Bailey was left traumatized. Nolan was unreachable because he was on shift. He was there when the tenant was questioned and the tenant revealed who killed the family. The family had apparently won a scratch off. They won fifteen hundred dollars.

They told a friend and he killed three people for it. He went by the name BadRod. He fired at police when they came to arrest him. Nolan was able to subdue by shooting him in the leg. BadRod was arrested. And Bailey learned to deal with her fears with some help from Luna.

The lawsuit was also dropped because the blamed laid with the sheriff’s office. Nolan returned home to a toddler. Before he left, he spoke with Lucy. Lucy had spoken with Bradford. Bradford told her he couldn’t say what was wrong because it would jeopardize her career if it ever got out.

Lucy then got mad at Bradford for not telling her everything. She kicked him out of her apartment. She hasn’t spoken with Bradford since. She went to Nolan because she wanted Nolan to convince Bradford to let them help him and he told her that wasn’t his place.

And Nolan and Bailey were talking about taking Anna permanently, but Luna found Anna’s uncle and the uncle wants custody of the little girl.
