Sami Zayn vs. Roman Reigns Planned For Elimination Chamber Main Event Since October

It appears the main event is set for this year's Elimination Chamber pay-per-view. While WWE hasn't announced anything official and a big development is likely to come on SmackDown Friday night, backstage talk is that WWE has set the stage for Sami Zayn to take on Roman Reigns in the main event for the title and not inside the structure.

In fact, Cultaholic Wrestling reports that this has been in the works for months. They tweeted, "Sami Zayn vs Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber has reportedly been the plan since October or early November. The feeling backstage is that the match is "so hot it doesn't matter what is on the rest of the show." Their article also cites Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer who provided further details about WWE's plans for the match. It appears that the company wanted Zayn in the event as the pay-per-view is taking place in Montreal, where Zayn is from and has a massive following. Meltzer notes that WWE had put these plans in motion well before Zayn cemented his position in The Bloodline by winning WarGames for the faction at Survivor Series.

While Austin Theory is set to defend his United States Championship in an Elimination Chamber Match, Zayn vs. Reigns will still go on last and WWE see this bout (even without the structure) as more of a main event-caliber contest. The storyline has been so strong leading into this that WWE isn't worried that the name of the event and the match itself aren't connected.

Can Zayn Win This Thing?

Considering the match between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns is now official, the odds of Sami winning at Elimination Chamber are slim to none. What might come out of this is a swerve that will see Jey Uso realigned with The Bloodline and a tag match set between The Usos and Kevin Owens, alongside Sami for the WWE Tag Team Championships.
