A 70-YEAR-OLD man told police he couldn't explain why he killed his partner's brother by hitting him in the head with a tomahawk, a court has heard.

Trevor McKenzie Dunford admits he killed Gary Grindrod, 53, on March 10, 2008, and has pleaded guilty to his manslaughter.

However the crown is proceeding with a trial for the higher charge of murder, saying Dunford had the requisite intent to kill or cause serious injury when he hit Mr Grindrod four times with the small axe.

"When one looks at the horrific injuries, what other intention could there have been," prosecutor Sal Vasta asked the jury in the Supreme Court in Brisbane on Tuesday.

Dunford has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Mr Vasta said Dunford caved in Mr Grindrod's head as he lay in bed at the house they shared at North Maclean, southwest of Brisbane.

He said the pair did not get on well and had previously bickered about petty things like beer.

However Mr Vasta said Dunford was at a loss to explain his actions on that particular day.

"I've no f***ing idea," he allegedly told police when asked why he killed Mr Grindrod.

"I was just horrified with myself.

"I donged him on the head a couple of times and then I squelched him between the eyes."

The court heard Dunford called police immediately after the attack and was arrested when they arrived a short time later.

Seven witnesses are expected to be called during the trial, which is set down for four days.
