A man has been charged after another man died in hospital days after he was allegedly attacked in a one-punch attack outside a bar. Michael Hayes, 39, was struck outside the Destino Wine and Cocktail Bar on the Hope Island suburb of Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast about 9.20pm Saturday.

Michael Hayes, 39, was struck outside the Destino Wine and Cocktail Bar on the Hope Island suburb of Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast about 9.20pm Saturday.

He was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital, but Queensland Police said on Thursday Mr Hayes had died from his injuries.

Late on Thursday night, Queensland Police said a 24-year-old Hope Island man had been charged with one count of unlawful striking causing death.

Police arrested the 24-year-old man on Thursday afternoon at an address in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast.

He is due to appear at Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday.

Detectives said Mr Hayes was punched once to the side of the head by a caucasian man, between 20 and 30-years-old, with short dark hair. The man was wearing a dark tracksuit.

In an earlier media conference, Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said they wanted to hear from anyone who saw the two men talking to each other along Masthead Way between 9pm and 9.30pm last Saturday.

“We know there was a number of interstate visitors who may have [since] returned to their homes,” said Mr Ahearn.
