12-year-old boy Dawlon Saunders, who was in a collision with a Mazda ute on Father’s Day has died “surrounded by family,” 14 days after he was rushed to hospital.

Queensland Police say the incident happened at about 5.10pm on Sunday, September 3 on David Low Way in Bli Bli, on the Sunshine Coast.

Police allege a Mazda B2600 Utility vehicle hit Dawlon while he was riding a scooter and officers confirmed Dawlon died on Monday, allegedly as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash.

According to his family, the child suffered multiple injuries including severe brain injuries, a fractured skull, broken collarbone and arm, and a burst bladder.

In an emotional Facebook post, his older sister Letitia Michelle Smith said Dawson died “surrounded by family” at 3.34pm on Sunday at Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.

“His progress scan in the first week showed he only had a small amount of damage to his outer brain where as Thursday’s showed a significant change,” she wrote.

“On Friday, mum had to make the difficult decision to turn off his life support. Dawlon being Dawlon had fought for two days.”

Dawlon’s sister has also created a GoFundMe to raise emergency funds for Dawlon, with the campaign raising more than $18,000 over the last two weeks.

A secondGoFundMe has been created to help the family with funeral costs and lawyer fees.

While investigations by the Forensic Crash Unit remain ongoing, police allege a 27-year-old Bli Bli man was driving the Mazda truck at the time of the incident, and returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.068.

He has been served a notice to appear at Maroochydore Magistrates Court on October 30 for drink driving.
